Want to take your beer right into deep, dark and seriously roasted territory? Weyermann® CARAFA® SPECIAL Type 2 is a fantastic choice when you need plenty of colour and rich roasted character, but still want to keep the harshness under control.

Like the rest of the CARAFA® SPECIAL range, Type 2 is made from quality German brewing barley with a large portion of the husk removed before roasting. This helps minimise roasted bitterness while delivering a beautifully smooth roasted character.

Expect coffee, cocoa and dark chocolate notes, with a finely roasted aroma. At 1100–1200 EBC, Type 2 is darker than CARAFA® SPECIAL Type 1, so a relatively small amount can have a big impact on the colour of your beer.

What can you brew with CARAFA® SPECIAL Type 2?

This is very much a malt for darker beers, although tiny additions can also be useful when you simply want to adjust colour without adding a huge amount of roast flavour.

Fancy giving a stout some extra depth? Building a pitch-black Baltic Porter? Or perhaps you're looking for that deep colour and subtle roast character in a Black IPA?

CARAFA® SPECIAL Type 2 gives you serious colour and roasted character while keeping things remarkably smooth.

Weyermann recommends using it at up to 5% of the grist for typical applications. It can also be used at around 0.5% for colour correction in lighter beers, while higher additions of up to 15% are possible in particularly roast-heavy recipes such as Irish Stout and Russian Imperial Stout. It has no enzyme activity, so use it alongside a suitable base malt.

Whole Grain or Crushed – You Choose

We offer Weyermann® CARAFA® SPECIAL Type 2 as whole grain or crushed grain, so you can choose the format that suits your brewing setup.

If you're milling your own grain, choose whole grain. If you'd rather have your specialty malts arrive ready for the mash, choose crushed and we'll do the milling for you.
