Guinness Extra Stout – All Grain Tribute Recipe Kit

There are few names in brewing as instantly recognisable as Guinness. But beyond the familiar draught stout, Guinness has produced a number of different beers over the years, including the fuller-bodied Guinness Extra Stout.

Our Guinness Extra Stout All Grain Tribute Recipe Kit is based on the recipe published by renowned British brewing author Graham Wheeler in Brew Your Own British Real Ales.

This is a proper old-school stout recipe rather than simply a dark beer with a Guinness name attached to it. Expect a deep, intensely dark beer with a pronounced roasted character, firm bitterness and the dry, satisfying finish that makes traditional Irish stout such a rewarding style to brew.

Brew Your Own Guinness Extra Stout

This tribute recipe has been put together for home brewers who want to recreate the character of a classic Guinness Extra Stout in their own brewery.

With an original gravity of 1.042, a finishing gravity of 1.013 and around 3.8% ABV, this isn't a heavyweight stout. It's a beer designed to be enjoyed by the pint – dark, roasty, bitter and remarkably drinkable.

The 45 IBU bitterness gives the beer plenty of structure, balancing the roasted malt character and helping produce the dry finish associated with traditional Irish stout.

And at around 203 EBC, this is properly dark. Hold it up to the light and you may find the familiar deep ruby highlights hiding beneath that almost-black appearance.

Guinness Extra Stout Brew Facts

  • Batch Size 23l
  • OG: 1.042
  • FG: 1.013
  • ABV: 3.8%
  • EBC: 203 EBC

These figures are the targets for the recipe supplied in this kit. Actual results can vary slightly depending on mash efficiency, fermentation and individual brewing equipment.

What to Expect From the Finished Beer

This is a classic Irish stout with a little more depth and bitterness than the familiar creamy draught stout many people know.

Expect a beer with:

  • A deep black appearance
  • Pronounced roasted malt character
  • Coffee-like roasted notes
  • Coffee-like roasted notes
  • A firm but balanced bitterness
  • A dry, clean finish
  • Plenty of flavour without excessive sweetness
  • Excellent drinkability at 3.8% ABV

The combination of roast and bitterness is what makes this style so satisfying. It has enough character to stand up to rich food, but remains light enough to enjoy as a session beer.

Based on Graham Wheeler's Guinness Extra Stout Recipe

The recipe used for this tribute kit comes from **Graham Wheeler's **Brew Your Own British Real Ales.

Wheeler's books have become something of a reference point for British home brewers, particularly those interested in recreating the beers of well-known British breweries. His recipes provide an interesting bridge between the beers we remember from the pub and the practical reality of brewing them at home.

We've used his published recipe as the basis for this kit so you can concentrate on the enjoyable part – getting the mash going, watching the wort develop through the boil and eventually pouring your own pint.

A Guinness Tribute From Grain Over Sands

At Grain Over Sands, we're based here in Cumbria and we're big believers in keeping the traditional side of home brewing alive.

There's something particularly satisfying about brewing a beer with a bit of history behind it. You aren't just following a recipe – you're recreating a small piece of brewing history in your own garage, shed, kitchen or brewery.

And that's exactly what we like about tribute recipes.

You don't need a commercial brewery to make an interesting beer. With good ingredients, a sound recipe and a little patience, you can brew something remarkably close in character to the beers that inspired you in the first place.

Whether you're a Guinness fan, a lover of traditional Irish stout or simply looking for your next all grain project, this Guinness Extra Stout Tribute All Grain Recipe Kit is a cracking beer to have in the fermenter.

Brew a Classic Irish Stout at Home

If you're looking for a Guinness Extra Stout all grain kit, a Guinness tribute recipe, an Irish stout recipe or a traditional dark beer to brew at home, this kit gives you the ingredients and recipe to get started.

Mash in, get the boil on, let the yeast do its work – and in a few weeks you'll have your own dark, bitter, roasty Irish stout ready for the glass.

Because there's something rather satisfying about pulling your first pint and thinking:

“I brewed that.”

This is an independent Guinness Extra Stout tribute recipe kit based on the recipe published by Graham Wheeler. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or produced by Guinness or Diageo.
