Galena T90 Hop Pellets US Hops

Galena T90 Hop Pellets US Hops

Galena is a traditional American high-alpha hop, valued for its balanced bitterness and distinctive blackcurrant character. Developed in Idaho from Brewer's Gold ancestry and released commercially in 1978, it became an important bittering variety in American brewing.

Although primarily used for bittering, Galena has more character than its reputation might suggest. Alongside its crisp, rounded bitterness, it offers notes of blackcurrant, citrus and subtle dark fruit, with gentle herbal undertones.

With its high alpha acid content, Galena is an economical choice for early boil additions, particularly in beers requiring a firm but balanced bitterness. Later additions can bring out its fruitier qualities, making it useful beyond the traditional bittering role.

Galena works particularly well in American pale ales, IPAs, porters, stouts and stronger ales. It's also an interesting option for brewers looking to experiment with something different from the more familiar American bittering hops.

Hop Pairings

Galena works particularly well alongside US Cascade, providing a firm, balanced bitterness while Cascade adds its familiar grapefruit and floral aroma.

Centennial is another excellent companion, bringing bright citrus and floral notes that complement Galena's more restrained fruit character.

For something a little different, try pairing Galena with Willamette in an American porter or brown ale, combining Galena's bittering qualities with Willamette's earthy, floral and gently spicy character.

Galena is also worth exploring in a single-hop American amber ale, using early additions for bitterness and later additions to discover its distinctive blackcurrant and citrus notes.
