If you like your beer dark, rich and full of character, Exmoor Beast is one worth brewing. This Exmoor Beast Tribute All Grain Kit is our take on the famous dark porter from Exmoor Ales – a strong, warming beer packed with rich malt, dark fruit, coffee and chocolate flavours.

Originally brewed in 1992, Exmoor Beast has become one of Exmoor Ales’ best-known beers. The brewery describes it as a full-bodied dark porter, inspired by the old tales of wild cats roaming the Exmoor moors. At 6.5%, it is certainly a beer with a bit of muscle behind it, but there is plenty going on beneath the strength.

Our 23 litre all grain recipe kit is based on the recipe published by Graham Wheeler in Brew Your Own British Real Ales. The combination of Maris Otter, crystal malt and chocolate malt builds the deep colour and rich malt character, while Challenger and Brewers Gold hops provide enough bitterness and hop character to keep the sweetness in check.

Expect a dark mahogany-coloured porter with flavours of toffee, treacle, chocolate and mocha coffee, alongside dark fruity and slightly rum-like notes. The finish is bittersweet and warming rather than cloyingly sweet – exactly the sort of beer that rewards taking your time over.

A beer for dark nights

This is a proper fireside beer. Think cold evening, a good book, a roaring fire and a pint of something with a bit more substance to it. At around 6.5%, it's not a beer to knock back like a session bitter – pour yourself a pint and enjoy it slowly.

And despite being a winter-friendly beer, there is no reason to hide it away until December. The combination of dark malt, coffee, chocolate and fruity character makes it an interesting beer to brew and drink throughout the year.
