Fancy brewing a proper traditional British Mild? Our Banks's Hanson’s Mild Tribute All Grain Kit recreates a classic West Midlands beer based on the recipe from Graham Wheeler’s Brew Your Own British Real Ales.

Mild is one of those wonderfully unfashionable British beer styles that deserves another look. This is a dark brown, easy-drinking ale with a rich malty character, gentle roast notes and a subtle sweetness balanced by traditional English hops. At just 3.4% ABV, it’s the sort of beer you can enjoy by the pint rather than treating it as an occasional heavyweight.

Expect a smooth, malty beer with flavours of biscuit, light caramel and roasted malt, followed by a gentle earthy bitterness from the classic English hops. Dark, satisfying and incredibly drinkable — exactly what a good Mild should be.

Hanson’s Mild has a genuine place in British brewing history. In 1979, Hanson’s Mild was awarded Gold in the Mild category of CAMRA’s Champion Beer of Britain, recognising it as one of the finest examples of the style in the country at the time.

The original Hanson’s Mild is no longer brewed, making this recipe a chance to recreate a little bit of that lost West Midlands brewing heritage in your own brewery.
